Dental floss is a simple yet essential tool for maintaining good oral hygiene. With many options available, choosing the right floss can be confusing. In this blog, we’ll explore the different types of dental floss and techniques for effective flossing.

Types of Dental Floss

When you walk down the dental aisle, it’s likely you’ll notice an abundance of dental floss options. Some common types of dental floss you’ll notice include:

Nylon (Multifilament) Floss: Nylon floss, also known as multifilament floss, is a popular choice due to its affordability and availability. It comes in waxed and unwaxed varieties and can be suitable for those with small spaces between their teeth.

Dental Tape: Dental tape is wider and flatter than regular floss. It is ideal for individuals with wider gaps between their teeth and is generally more comfortable to use.

Waxed vs. Unwaxed: Waxed floss can slide more easily between tight spaces, while unwaxed floss may be preferable if you have more space between your teeth.

Flossing Techniques

No matter which floss you use, the technique you use is just as important. Follow these steps to enhance your flossing techniques:

    1. Cut a piece of floss around 18 inches long. This allows you to use a clean section of floss for each tooth and ensures you have enough to floss all your teeth without reusing the same part.

    2. Be gentle when inserting the floss between your teeth to avoid damaging your gums. Use a back-and-forth sawing motion to ease it between tight spaces.

    3. Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth. Gently glide it up and down along the sides of the tooth, reaching just below the gumline.

    4. Avoid snapping the floss against your gums, as this can cause irritation and bleeding. Instead, use a gentle, sliding motion.

    5. As you move from tooth to tooth, unwind a fresh section of floss to avoid transferring bacteria. Make sure to floss the front and back sides of each tooth, including the hard-to-reach molars.
