Emergency Dentistry FAQs
What are some common dental emergencies?
Wondering if your dental problem constitutes as an emergency? Here are some of the most common types of dental emergencies:
- Chipped or Cracked Tooth
- Broken Filling, Crown, Bridge, or Denture
- Chronic Cold Sores
- Permanent Tooth Knocked Out
- Severe Toothache or Sore Gums
- Abscessed Tooth
What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?
Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If not, keep it moist in a container of milk or your own saliva and call us immediately. Teeth replanted within 30–60 minutes have the best chance of survival.
What can I do to manage pain before seeing a dentist?
If you have tooth pain, first try gently brushing and flossing around the tooth. This can help dislodge any particles that may be causing the discomfort. If it’s not debris causing the pain, you can use an over-the-counter pain medication (ibuprofen works better than acetaminophen for dental pain) and ice the area — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off — until you can get to our office.
Do you see new patients for dental emergencies?
Yes — emergency appointments are open to both new and existing patients. If you’re new to our practice, our team will gather your basic information when you call so we can get you in quickly.
What if I can’t afford to see the dentist?
At Grafton Dental Care, we never want patients to have to put off seeking emergency care due to cost concerns. We offer a wide range of payment methods to make urgent dental care more affordable and accessible for all. From insurance to financing to our in-house dental discount plan, we have something to fit everyone’s budget.
What if my dental emergency happens after hours?
Our hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 AM to 6 PM. If you experience a severe emergency after hours — significant facial swelling, a knocked-out tooth, or uncontrolled bleeding — please go to your nearest hospital emergency room. For non-life-threatening dental emergencies, you can book your appointment online any time at visitgdc.com — we’ll prioritize getting you in first thing when we open. You’re also welcome to call (508) 318-4477 and leave us a message; we’ll get back to you as soon as we’re back in the office.
